For decades, Hollywood has capitalized on indigeno For decades, Hollywood has capitalized on indigenous peoples by using their likeness in film, but as more and more indigenous creators move behind and in front of the camera on their own terms, there has been a significant shift in the stories we see on-screen. Contrary to popular belief in Hollywood, indigenous film is not a separate genre on its own — indigenous filmmakers have been breaking through in nearly EVERY genre with innovative storytelling and refreshing perspectives. This November, refrain from watching romanticized white-savior films, and turn instead to storytelling by indigenous creators. We’ve compiled a list of 18 films across various genres, from acclaimed classics to contemporary cinema and TV — this is just a small taste of what is already out there. Let us champion indigenous filmmakers, now and every day to witness their art and the truth behind our world’s history.

May they shake you into action. May they help you find the words for what you already know to be true... These words remind me that home is a series of shared memories, not brick and mortar. Home is where we go to remember and revisit who we’ve always been. At Reclamation, we’ve always believed in the power of storytelling — beyond facts and figures, stories allow us to feel the breadth of human emotion, and to empathize and understand one another. In the immortal words of Edward Said: “When political identity is under threat, culture becomes a resistance tool in the face of attempts to obliterate, annihilate and exclude. Resistance is a form of memory in exchange for forgetting. They have shown us the Israeli night raids and home invasions; the settlers stealing our homes; the Israeli police and IDF gassing us and shooting us during prayer at Al Aqsa; the IDF bombing us in Gaza. They are brave enough to film it, relying on us in the diaspora to be brave enough to share it widely and continuously. Together, and for the very first time, we have changed this twisted media game forever. Palestinians everywhere are feeling strong ancestral ties to one another. These are the same ties that bind all indigenous people throughout history who have been colonized and massacred. I feel this connection every time I choose to speak up and not temper my words. I am a vocal vessel for my Palestinian ancestors who survived genocide - and for those who did not. As our ancestors give me the right language to use on my platform to tell our stories, they give our brothers and sisters in Palestine the physical strength to stand up tall and strong against brutality, to pull our people out of the rubble and to simply live on and keep fighting the oppressors. Three years ago today, I made a decision that woul Three years ago today, I made a decision that would not only change the trajectory of my career, but my life. Perhaps in the spirit of entering my twenties and the strong desire to pursue a passion that had been my dream for as long as I could remember, I created a space for storytellers and artists whose work is often neglected in the mainstream media. Reclamation Magazine was born. What started out as a passion project quickly grew into a platform with a reach and impact I could never have anticipated. Today, we celebrate three years — our contributors, volunteers, and supporters, whether you’ve been with us since the beginning or are just joining us on this journey now. We would not not be where we are today without the continuous efforts of our team and readers — this is especially true as Reclamation is entirely volunteer-based and self-funded by myself and a few gracious folks who were generous enough to pitch in when I needed it the most. Alice Walker once said, “The most common way people give up their power is by thinking they don't have any.” As a little girl, if I had been exposed to even a quarter of the platforms that exist today dedicated to giving marginalized artists a voice, I wouldn’t have felt so alone. And that’s the entire purpose of it all — shattering stereotypes, preconceived notions, micro-aggressions, misguided diversity quotas and building our own table so that future generations don’t have to demand a seat at one that rarely acknowledges their potential. In her photo series the “Isms Project”, writer In her photo series the “Isms Project”, writer and lawyer Nailah Dean (@nailahdean28) explores the -isms in Muslim courtship. She notes, “Skin color, race, and ethnicity should play no factor in who we love and marry. Islam doesn’t set those parameters, so why are you? I have spent the last few years exploring the illusive world of Muslim dating (or courtship). The good, the bad, and the ugly. I’ve shared what I’ve learned and encountered through my writing. The written word, while powerful, did not fully capture the carnage left by the Muslim Marriage Crisis. Living during a digital, hyper-visual time, I believed the best way to showcase the struggle, the pain, and frustration of single Muslim women searching for marriage, was through a photo series. In hopes of humanizing this issue, I found four women to represent four of the isms I believe are at the heart of the crisis: sexism, ageism, racism and colorism. While this is by no means an exclusive list of the isms and other causes of the marriage crisis, I thought it was a good starting point to illustrate some of the barriers to marriage. The photos depict two versions of the women: one photo depicts her battle with the ism, and the second symbolizes her freedom from it. I wanted the dual photos to present the problem, and not necessarily the resolution, but the defiance of the Muslim woman who continues to seek love and marriage despite the ism(s) that challenge and deter her.” Photographer: @hijabihybrid Designer: @sew.modest
