“People talk about the idea of intergenerational trauma: that trauma can be passed down from generation to generation through child-rearing practices, cultural traditions, and more. Recent studies have even shown that trauma can alter our genetic makeup, and that it can be passed down to future generations attached to our DNA. “With light silhouetting my shoulders, I will push into the dark night, no longer bound by shadows that trailed so long behind me. For they do not tell my story. They do not hold my truth. They cannot keep me from the things I am meant to do. “I am not sure exactly what healing is or looks like, what form it comes in, what it should feel like. I do know that when I was four I could not lift a gallon of milk, could not believe how heavy it was, that white sloshing boulder. I’d pull up a wooden chair to stand over the counter, pouring milk with two shaking arms, wetting the cereal, spilling. Since our launch in 2018, Reclamation Magazine has recruited over 300 contributors all over the world, with more than 50 ambassadors. Three years ago today, I made a decision that would not only change the trajectory of my career, but my life. Perhaps in the spirit of entering my twenties and the strong desire to pursue a passion that had been my dream for as long as I could remember, I created a space for storytellers and artists whose work is often neglected in the mainstream media. Reclamation Magazine was born. In her photo series the “Isms Project”, writer and lawyer Nailah Dean (@nailahdean28) explores the -isms in Muslim courtship. Unapologetic. Courageous. Electrifying. These are the words that come to mind when we think of these nine brilliant works by Muslim women. “What do you see when you think of me, “The fashion industry was built on secrecy and elitism; it was opaque. Transparency is disruptive — in that sense, it’s a breath of fresh air and a useful weapon of change.
